How to Support Someone in Inpatient Rehab

For those with loved ones or friends in inpatient rehab centers, there can be questions and concerns about what to say or how to be most supportive. People go to rehabilitation facilities for a number of reasons. However, all of them involve some sort of illness or trauma. That means that the person of concern is sick or injured and needs therapy, patience, and positive thinking in order to heal and regain what they can of their lives.

Common sense dictates that you neither enable nor control the patient. Either approach keeps them from progressing mentally and physically through the therapy they need in order to recover to their fullest ability. Rehabilitation patients can be helped by being allowed to act for themselves, even if those actions take longer or aren't perfectly executed. By pushing themselves to do what they can in inpatient rehab centers, they are able to maintain or regain abilities that otherwise could be lost.

Patience is another way to support someone in inpatient rehab. They could have anywhere from a small amount to a great deal of loss in the ability to perform basic life tasks. That is true for both the patients and their loved ones. Common sense dictates that although negative emotions are part of the experience, patients are helped by being surrounded with positive support. Try to keep outlooks based on what can be gained and current talks about what has been accomplished. That isn't to say conversations can't be realistic, but they don't have to be negative.
